The ironic and sarcastic t-shirt fad can be traced back to the counterculture movements of the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, self titled 'hippies' used clothing as a medium for self-expression and rebellion against traditional values. T-shirts with humorously subversive slogans emerged as a way to challenge societal norms and authority. These slogans often incorporated wordplay, satire, and irreverence.
Taking inspiration from the 'hippies' from the 70s-80s, we recreated these iconic looks using our felt letters placed on true vintage blank tees, worn by the people of Haight-Ashbury street in San Francisco, California.
